NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured images of the spiral galaxy NGC 3137, located about 53 million light-years away in the constellation Antlia (the Air Pump). This nearby spiral offers researchers a chance to study stellar birth and death within a system that may resemble the Milky Way’s environment.

NGC 3137 belongs to the NGC 3175 galaxy group, which is thought to be similar to our Local Group. Both groups contain two major spiral galaxies—NGC 3137 and NGC 3175 in one, and the Milky Way and Andromeda in the other—along with multiple smaller dwarf galaxies. While the specific number of companion galaxies in the NGC 3175 group is unclear, scientists have identified over 500 dwarf galaxy candidates.

By studying the NGC 3175 group, astronomers aim to better understand the dynamics of our Local Group and the processes behind the formation and evolution of galaxies like the Milky Way.
