The Rapid Support Forces militia and Sudan's military government have been engaged in violent clashes since April 2023. Recent attacks in two North Darfur towns near the Sudan-Chad border reportedly killed at least 12 people, including children, and injured others, according to the UN Deputy Spokesperson.
Increased drone strikes are further endangering civilians amid displacement and restricted humanitarian access. The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, continues diplomatic efforts for de-escalation and future political dialogue, with the UN urging all combatants to protect civilians and permit humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
Meanwhile, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, gang-related violence has intensified since 10 May, particularly in the Cité Soleil neighborhood, displacing about 17,500 people, or over 4,200 households, as estimated by the UN migration agency IOM. Many displaced people are sheltering in sites or with vulnerable families, facing urgent needs for food, water, healthcare, and hygiene supplies, with safety concerns due to poor site conditions.
UN humanitarian partners remain engaged in response efforts despite security and access challenges, coordinated by OCHA.
Additionally, UN Women has expressed concern over a recent Taliban decree (No. 18) that further diminishes the rights of Afghan women and girls, nearly five years after the Taliban returned to power.
