The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session to address peace and security in Ukraine following large-scale missile and drone attacks. Secretary-General António Guterres told ambassadors, "the time for peace is now," stressing the urgency as Kyiv described the attacks as the most devastating the capital has faced to date.
The assault occurred in the early hours of 23–24 May, when Russia launched a massive barrage against multiple Ukrainian cities. Moscow has since threatened further strikes. In response, European member states demanded an immediate ceasefire to halt the violence.
During the session, Russia insisted its military operations targeted only military infrastructure. However, the Security Council remains divided over how to address the escalating conflict.
