Multiple airstrikes and military actions in southern Lebanon have resulted in at least 13 injuries and increased tensions, according to Lebanese authorities cited by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Between 17 and 28 April, 48 people were killed and 183 injured; since the escalation began on 2 March, health ministry reports over 2,500 killed and more than 7,800 wounded. Despite an extended ceasefire, violence continues to hinder humanitarian access and recovery operations. Aid organizations have conducted 100 missions to hard-to-reach areas under a UN-coordinated notification system to deliver relief to affected communities.
In Lebanon, insecurity and the conflict's economic fallout have worsened food insecurity and strained livelihoods. The UN-backed IPC food security tracker warns of rapidly deteriorating conditions, estimating nearly a quarter of the population now faces acute hunger. Up to 1.2 million people may face high levels of food insecurity by August. The World Food Programme (WFP) is scaling up efforts with partners to address these urgent needs.
The humanitarian situation is further strained by displacement and overstretched public services. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted a Jdeideh school in northern Beirut converted into a shelter, now housing about 377 people (around 90 families) in cramped conditions. WHO and partners are working to reinforce medical treatment, including support for hospital blood banks to provide critical transfusions during emergencies.
Diplomatic engagement continues. UN Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss efforts to sustain the cessation of hostilities and promote stability. She has also held discussions with Israeli officials in recent days.
Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain critical, with overcrowded shelters, limited water access, and rising health risks. UN and partner teams have observed these challenges during visits to displacement sites in eastern Gaza City.
