The medals for the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, held on 2-3 May, were unveiled as part of Botswana's Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years of independence. The medals feature natural diamonds sourced from Botswana, emphasizing the country's journey and values such as resilience and excellence, according to the event’s press release.

Okavango Diamond Company partnered with Ankit Gems Botswana and SRK Export to locally polish 120 diamonds, highlighting Botswana's manufacturing capabilities and diamond beneficiation program. The medals were designed by Thabang Maphanyane of The Dialogue Group to blend national symbolism with progressive values.

The design incorporates the Mohembo Bridge entwined with abstract elephant tusks, representing connection, movement, and Botswana’s role in tourism and trade. The tusks also signify cultural conversation, wildlife preservation, and Botswana's African identity. Surrounding these elements is a zebra pattern, nodding to the national animal and introducing rhythm and unity among participants.

At the center of the medals sits a diamond, symbolizing both a pillar of Botswana’s economy and the aspiration and excellence of world-class athletes. The unveiling ceremony at the National Museum and Art Gallery featured His Excellency President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko delivering the keynote address.

This initiative, supported by a P10 million sponsorship, reflects Botswana’s commitment to sport, national pride, and global recognition through the symbolic medals worn by the world’s top relay runners.
